Melksham Council of Community Service (MCCS) is a charity that was registered in 1975. Its purpose is "to promote the benefit of the inhabitants of Melksham and the neighbourhood by associating local voluntary organisations, statutory agencies and inhabitants in a common effort to provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation and leisure time occupation, and to advance education, with the object of improving the conditions of life for the inhabitants." MCCS provides two important services in Melksham:

COMMUNITY MINIBUS

The minibus is primarily for the use of senior citizens, the disabled and one-parent families. It is regularly used to take passengers to luncheon clubs, to community or daycare centres, on shopping trips and on outings. MCCS employs two drivers who drive the minibus full-time on alternating weeks. The service is door-to-door; passengers are picked up from home, dropped-off at their destination and later taken home again. A nominal charge is made for journeys which is used to help cover fuel costs.

The minibus is available for hire with driver 7 days a week. It has 14 seats and is equipped with a hydraulic tail-lift to enable passengers in wheelchairs to travel.

For more information telephone (01225) 704325

The cost of keeping the minibus on the road is met by a grant from Wiltshire County Council whilst passenger contributions are put towards fuel costs. MCCS is part of the Wiltshire & Swindon Community Transport Group. The group meets bi-monthly to exchange information and ideas and to meet shared needs such as driver training.

The minibus is currently on lease, but when the lease expires (at the end of this year) MCCS hope to buy the minibus. When the cost is known MCCS will be seeking to raise funds to buy the minibus from the leasing company. If you can help please contact MCCS on (01225) 704325.

MELKSHAM INFORMATION OFFICE

MCCS is registered as the Information Office for Melksham and district. The Information Office operates a telephone help-line that anybody can call for information on almost anything. Callers should note that the help-line is for information, not advice.

The best way to appreciate the service that the Information Office provides is to read about some of the calls that the help-line has received:

  • An elderly person called to say that their curtains had fallen down and to ask who they could contact to get someone to come and put them back up.
  • A caller phoned to ask how they could get a home help.
  • A caller phoned to ask who to contact for help with flooding.
  • A caller phoned to report that a street-lamp was out and that somebody had fallen over as a result.
  • A caller phoned to ask where they could get modern and ancient Catholic hymns.

Melksham Information Office is open 365 days a year. You can contact them on:
