The Council employs a clerk who is responsible to the Council as a whole and has the task of being Chief Executive, Secretary, Financial Officer and “Dogs Body”, all rolled into one! Read the clerk's job description.

Mary is well qualified in Local Government matters. She has a BA Honours degree in Local Policy from the University of Gloucester and was awarded the Zurich Municipal prize for her first class dissertation on quality councils. Mary is also a graduate in English from Southampton University (BA Honours).

The Clerk's role is to:

  • Organise meetings and take minutes.
  • Keep the Council as fully informed as possible on local matters.
  • Manage the Council accounts and attend Audit.
  • Ensure the Council acts legally.
  • Deal with public enquiries.
  • Research material for Council projects and meetings.
  • Carry out the wishes of the Council as efficiently as possible.
  • Take responsibility for Council staff.
  Melksham Without also employs a part-time Caretaker, Barry Mylchreest. Prior to working for the council, Barry served 22 years in the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers (REME) as an Artificer Staff Sergeant in many different places around the world, so he is extremely well qualified to look after the parish and carry out our maintenance jobs! If you see him out and about with his parish trailer, please say hello and express your appreciation for the excellent work he is doing.
